Title: Criss-Cross Rule
Description: Honors Chemistry
November 20, 2020

Polyatomic ions vs. monatomic ions
Polyatomic ion: a group of atoms that stay together and have a single, overall charge.

Memorize the names of eight polyatomic ions:
    (CO3)2-     carbonATE
    (SO4)2-     sulfATE
    (NO3) 1-    nitrATE
    (PO4)3-     phosphATE
    (ClO3)1-    chlorATE
    (NH4)1+    ammonium
    (CN)1-       cyanide
    (OH)1-       hydroxide

Polyatomic Ions Grid to Memorize  pdf  (naming)
Reference:  Chart of the Ions and Polyatomic Ions  pdf

    "per _____ ate" 1 more oxygen
    "-ate" "normal" # of oxygen
    "-ite" 1 oxygen less
    "hypo _____ ite" 2 oxygen less

(+) and (-) ions attract to form neutral compounds.
    (Na)1+ (F)1- ---> NaF
    (Na)1+ (O)2- ---> Na2O
    (Mg)2+ (Br)1- ---> MgBr2

Chemical Formula: show types of atoms and how many of each
    NO CHARGES SHOWN
Cation written first, followed by anion.

Go over naming of binary compounds (will have suffix "-ide")
        metal (fixed charge) + non-metal
        metal (variable charge) + non-metal [STOCK SYSTEM]
        polyatomic ions (generally will end with '"-ate" or "-ite")
