Learning Objectives: By the end of the class you should be able to correctly name 1) fixed metal with non-metal or polyatomic, 2) variable charge metal with nonmetal or polyatomic ions (Stock sytem using roman numeral for charge on metal) and 3) covalent molecules (two or more nonmetals (using greek prefixes).
Reviewed how to name metal (fixed charge) + nonmetal AND metal (variable charge) + nonmetal
Fixed metals are Group 1, Group 2 and Group 13, Al3+, Zn2+ and Ag1+. ALL other metals will be named using a Roman numeral for the charge/oxidation state on the metal [this is called the Stock system]
We will NOT be quizzed over "Old/Traditional" -"ic" and -"ous" or Acid nomenclature I also did not cover empirical and molecular formula. These will not be on the quiz. I may cover them later if time permits.
No time to cover these and I want an extra day for covering Nuclear.
Introduced Covalent Molecule naming: Nonmetal + nonmetal. Use Greek prefixes to say how many of each nonmetal are in the molecule. DO NOT use roman numerals, no criss-cross, no charges used
You must memorize Greek prefixes: 1 - mono 2 - di 3 - tri 4 - tetra 5 - penta 6 - hexa 7 - hepta 8 - octa 9 - nona 10 - deca
QUIZ will be on Thursday 9-24-26 and be mainly name to formula and formula to name.
