Laboratory Activity: A Chemical Reaction
Experimental Overview: The goal of the experiment is to execute a chemical reaction and to use molecular weight and stoichiometric calculations to determine the amounts of reactants to use and the amount of the product that is expected to form upon completion of the reaction.
Equipment Used: Balance; spatula; beakers; stirring rod; graduated cylinder; vacuum filtration apparatus (with Büchner funnel); watch glass; oven
Analysis Performed: Balance chemical reactions; calculate molecular weights; conversions based on atomic weights, molecular weights, and reaction stoichiometry; calculate percent yield; determine whether the reaction was endothermic or exothermic
Demo: Formation of sodium chloride from molten sodium metal in chlorine gas. (begin 4:15)
