Ions - charged particles cations are positively formed and come from metals losing electrons anions are negatively charged and come from nonmetals gaining electrons.
Atoms DO NOT lose protons.
If an atom gains or loses electrons it becomes an ION
If an atom gains neutrons it becomes an ISOTOPE of the same element (different mass)
If an atom gains protons it is undergoing TRANSMUTATION and is changing into another element.
Transmutation can only happen during a NUCLEAR REACTION.
